What happened to the smiles?

From another time when things were fun, people were close and serious was just a seven letter word. When spending too much time on the phone meant a painted face, not a huff.
Why isn't tomorrow an opportunity for fun any more?
When and more importantly how did it all get so sensible?
What's next, does it matter? When do we find out the answers?
The series ended on a cliff-hanger then got decommissioned.
Why still wait-because there is nothing else to do-nothing else to fill that void.
