Shaka Zulu

This is an Elephant that was on the wall at Shaka Zulu, which is where we ate on Tuesday last week. African cuisine and extravagant décor, I 'd been told good things about this place and I wasn't disappointed. You walk in and straight onto an escalator going into the basement, there are Masai Mara statues that cover both floors and the life sized wooden elephants stampeding out of the walls and shells covering the remainder of the wall everything about the place was imposing. It's overwhelmingly decadent and perfect for an indulgent evening. The courses were hit or miss, for starter I had rooibos smoked salmon, it came with a slice of buttered brown rye bread and pickled cucumber (which was actually pickled cucumber & not gherkins like I'd imagined. It tasted just like smoked salmon and there wasn't enough other stuff on the plate to tone down the salmon taste. Mark had a Dora Wat which was a small chicken curry with a boiled egg in it. I had a taste-it was much more exciting than mine was, spicy yum. For the main I had a sirloin steak which was sublime! Tasty char grilled and pink in the middle, it was probably the nicest steak I've ever eaten. Mark had the Bobotie which was another curry dish, which once again I tried and it was ok, but to be honest I just wanted to get back to eating my steak! Desert wasn't very nice-I had a Koeksisters which is a plaited doughnut with syrup & sugar, it was tasteless. Mark forgot that he's lactose intolerant when he ordered his desert and ordered rice pudding, so we swapped desert half way through-I don't like rice pudding and they were extremely tight with the banana jam.

It was a nice experience and well worth a look around, but it would be far to pricey without the voucher and with the voucher the menu options are a bit too limited to make it the experience that you definitely want it to be.
